Welcome to 5/6 Chestnut Class.
Here you will find teacher Miss Giles and learning support assistant Mrs Davis working extremely hard to support year five and six along their learning journey.
We have weekly spelling tests, handwriting practise and encourage our children to be reading at least once a day. We also have regular short grammar and punctuation sessions to allow the children to practise this important area of English and to prepare them for their SPAG test (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) at the end of year six.
Homework involves weekly spellings, reading and usually one other piece of either English or Maths work. Children are expected to keep their diary updated with homework set and reading achieved but it is also suggested parents regularly check their homework diaries to keep informed. We collect in diaries once a week and really appreciate it if parents can sign once you have listened to your child read.
The children have an arithmetic test once a week and during our early morning activity they practise using the four basic operations to further develop their understanding of maths. We endeavour to bring maths to life through linking our lessons to real-life problems wherever possible.
You can view the half termly quests with details of the subjects and key learning points on the curriculum page.
Our PE slot is every Friday afternoon and either a Tuesday or Thursday (alternate weeks) so please ensure all children have an appropriate PE kit. Some Year 5 children will also have extra swimming lesson every other week.
Please do not hesitate to drop by after school should you have any concerns or would like to discuss your child’s progress.
